Making Felt Yardage for Sewing a Coat
with Chris Liszak
WORKSHOP ONE August 8, 9, 10, 11, 2024

www.focusonfibreart.org

Description
PLEASE NOTE - we are offering two separate dates for this workshop. Chris calls Niagara Falls home and has agreed to stay for two workshops with a 2-day rest period in between. Be sure you are signing up for the right dates.
Workshop One August 8, 9, 10, 11
Workshop Two August 14, 15, 16, 17
Three days of creating large sheets of finished felt which will then be cut using commercial patterns and sewn to create the finished coat. The course will show students how to measure the pattern pieces and translate that to the felt layout to allow shrinkage to fit the pieces without too much waste. The focus (once the math is done) will be on the felt surface design and the edges that will be used in the coat (hems, front edges, sleeve ends) to eliminate hems and allow the felt to have “facings” built in. No sewing skills required - Basic felting experience is needed
The fourth day - the dry finished felt is cut and sewn under supervision of the instructor. Students bring a sewing machine and create the coat. Chris will also be happy to sew a few coats that day for those who cannot sew.

What Does the Student Bring to Class?
Coat Yardage Workshop - Chris Liszak / instructor
Choose from Thin Jacket (easier project) or Thick Outdoor Coat

EQUIPMENT:
6’ by 4’ bubble wrap
6’ by 8’ plastic wrap
4’ pool noodle or wood rolling dowel
Felting solution application device (bucket and sprayer, or bottle with holes in top)
Soap of choice
Bucket to catch extra water
Tape measure
Marker, pen, notepad, calculator (use phone if you like)
Lots of towels
Optional: tools (mool types), netting if you like to use it.
MATERIALS:
Thin Jacket using prefelts (recommended for slower or newer felters)
4 meters (small) - 8 meters (x-large) of 48’ wide (or wider) of prefelt in base colour. When in doubt, bring MORE not less.
4 - 8 meters (smal l- xlarge) of 48’ wide silk fabric (MUST BE SHEER - like chiffon, gauze, georgette, margolin). HINT: burn test if you are not sure it is silk! This can be lots of different pieces. When in doubt - bring too much!
50 - 200 grams of merino top to “match” the prefelt or the silk fabric
Contrast design: variety of prefelts and/or merino top in contrasting colours to add to the design. I like black and white prefelts.
Other fibres: silk fibre, viscose, yarns, and anything else you like to use. I like to add these in the same colour as the merino top to add shine and texture to the design.

Thick Coat using Batts. (a bit more work to felt together and longer layout time)
2 lbs Felting Batts - can be two different colours - one inside and one outside the coat
4-8 meters (small to x-large) of 48’ wide silk fabric (MUST BE SHEER - like chiffon, gauze, georgette, margolin). HINT: burn test if you are not sure that it is silk! This can be lots of different pieces. When in doubt - bring too much!

Suggested sources:
Prefelt: Artgus in Montreal. Nathalie carries two thicknesses. The THIN is more sturdy to work with and really wide. If you get two or three students to order together it helps with shipping.
Silk. Mostly I use eBay for vintage Saris. Search Pure Chiffon Silk or Georgette. READ the description to see if they claim a burn test. BEST VENDOR: Sanskriti. If they say it’s silk - it will be silk. Allow 4-6 weeks to get the sari. One sari is enough for a small to medium coat. Bring two that look nice together for bigger sizes.
Felting Batts: Custom Woolen Mills. Two batts, both the same or two colours that work together (blue+green, Grey+black). Make sure it is a felting batt and not a quilt batt.
Day Four - cutting and sewing your coat
Pattern - Butterick 6107 is recommended, but one of your choice may be ok with pre-approval of the instructor. You don’t need to buy your own copy. Chris can share hers.
Sewing Machine (possible to share if you don’t have one)
Threads to match your coat fabric yardage
Pins
Scissors
Pattern (arrange this ahead with Chris if bringing your own. Chris has LOTS)
Needles for hand sewing
Buttons to match (can be chosen later)

NOTES: You don’t need to know how to sew. Chris or her assistants will sew it for you, or help you sew it. We need you there so it will fit YOU perfectly.
Chris welcomes your questions - send her an email [email protected]
Chris will be staying at the Best Western Cedar Park Inn, 5116 Gateway Blvd, Edmonton
For those out of towners, consider staying here and we can manage car pools.
