About this Event
Any hike in the temperate Southern Appalachians presents opportunities in all shapes and sizes to lean in close and learn more about ferns and fern allies. Botanist David Phillips leads this immersive field-based workshop on the biology and identification of the region’s fascinating ferns. A hand lens and field journal are essential tools on the trail. Students should dress comfortably for the weather and be able to make short walks on moderate and some uphill terrain without assistance.
David Phillips holds a doctorate in Botany from the University of British Columbia, with continuing research in chemical ecology, systematics, and natural products chemistry. He worked in industry for 35 years in environmental protection and has studied spore producing plants for nearly half a century. A native of WNC, he has roamed the mountains all his life and travelled abroad extensively in search of rare and unusual species.
