Join Edinburgh based artist, Lauren McLaughlin for an empowering day of feminist art history and collage making!
About this Event

Throughout art history, women’s lives and experiences have been represented through the lens of the male gaze. Taking inspiration from contemporary feminist artists such as Barbara Kruger, Guerilla Girls, Elen Gallagher, Linder and Karla Black, we’ll be using collage to dissect and reinterpret the ways in which women have been portrayed throughout art history and visual culture. Using celebrated imagery from art history, we will use a range of collage techniques to reimagine the narrative, coming up with our own empowering images.

The day will begin with a series of short warm up exercises using figures and objects from art history. We will look at the work of contemporary collage artists and have a go at a number of different collage techniques. After lunch participants will work on their own A3 collages using a variety of materials and techniques.

This workshop is suitable for all levels of experience and open to all women, and non-binary folks aged 16+

All materials will be provided but you are welcome to bring along your own images, paper, magazines etc to incorporate into your collages if you wish. Participants can bring along their own packed lunch or pop out to get something from the nearby takeaways. Tea and snacks will be provided.

Spilt Milk is a social enterprise and any surplus generated from our workshop programme is reinvested into providing opportunities for mothers on low income.
