The Ngaio Marsh Awards, in association with Manawatū Community Hub Libraries, invites booklovers to a thrilling free event featuring five talented Kiwi storytellers. Local Feilding novelist Patricia Dunmore welcomes fellow Manawatū authors Gigi Fenster and Bing Turkby and police officers turned #1 New Zealand Fiction bestsellers ‘the Bookshop Detectives’ Gareth and Louise Ward for a criminally good conversation about the art of storytelling, crafting memorable characters, the impact of setting and real-life issues, and what drew each of them to telling stories filled with mystery and thrills.

Patricia Dunmore is a Feilding author who has spent a lifetime in publishing, and has personally written more than 15 books across many genres, fiction and non-fiction, for children and adults. Patricia has worked for a variety of publishers, including Harlequin Mills & Boon, was a co-founder of Dunmore Press and Upstart Press, and is currently the owner of Heritage Press. She has taught writing in both schools and the community. Her new novel, published in April 2025, is the thriller HUMAN ERROR.
Gigi Fenster is an award-winning novelist, short story writer, and Massey University academic who has taught law and creative writing. Her psychological thriller A GOOD WINTER, won the Michael Gifkins Award, and was shortlisted for the Acorn Prize for Fiction at the 2022 Ockham NZ Book Awards
Bing Turkby is a Manawatū writer, librarian, and musician. He is the author of the 'Guitar Store Mysteries' series of cosy crime novels, set in a fictionalised version of Palmerston North. Bing writes stories with a 95% chance of guitars and a 45% chance of cats.
Gareth and Louise Ward are the real-life owners of independent bookshop Wardini Books, with stores in Havelock North and Napier. They met at police training college in the UK and are both ex-coppers. THE BOOKSHOP DETECTIVES: DEAD GIRL GONE is Gareth and Louise’s first book together, and became the biggest-selling New Zealand fiction title of 2024. A sequel, TEA AND CAKE AND DEATH, is coming out on 1 April 2025.
