About this Event

Part of our Let’s Go Back to the Movies series

Sunday, September 6, 2026 (Labor Day weekend so you can sleep it off in the Shire on Monday)

LOCATION: The Los Angeles Theater, 615 S Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90014

SPECIAL NOTE: We’re screening the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy in the opera house of Los Angeles cinemas-the Los Angeles Theater, built in 1931 by showman H.L. Gumbiner — with Charlie Chaplin himself putting up money to finish it in time to host the world premiere of City Lights, with Einstein in the audience.. We’ll have 1 hour intermissions between each movie so audiences can explore the theater, go down to an entire level we’re setting up with bars, food courts, music. This is a once in a lifetime experience, a mecca of cinema. We have a whole day planned of cinema, food, drink, trivia, tours, movie lore.

10a THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING (2001, dir by Peter Jackson, New Line Cinema, 178mns, USA/NEW ZEALAND, theatrical version)

2p THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS (2002, dir by Peter Jackson, New Line Cinema, 179 mns, USA/NEW ZEALAND, theatrical version)

6p THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (2003, dir by Peter Jackson, New Line Cinema, 201mns, USA/NEW ZEALAND, theatrical version)

10p THERE AND BACK AGAIN AFTERPARTY After-hours in the secret rooms of the 1931 Los Angeles Theatre, spaces almost no one gets to see after our Lord of the Rings trilogy screening Sun 9/6/26 @ 10p. Music, drinks, food, dancing, fun. Celebrate seeing this trilogy like the great opera it is with fellow LOTR and movie lovers.

You can get tickets to any individual movie (and add the Afterparty a la carte) or get the All-Day pass (all movies, with or without afterparty, best deal).

Please note that while we are working to screen these movies on 35mm prints if possible, if we have any issues, we will have DCP/digital back ups. The show must go on!

10a LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING When Peter Jackson and his team set out to make a movie adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s all time classic fantasy trilogy The Lord of the Rings, they would end up going to Mordor and back just like the Fellowship.

The movies were all shot back to back to back, one of cinema’s biggest gambles, and it wasn’t until part of Fellowship screened at Cannes in 2001 that everyone involved realized the movies just might be huge hits.

Shot in New Zealand which is now synonymous with Middle Earth, Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring like the first book tells the story of hobbits Frodo and loyal friend Sam who set out with the wizard Gandalf and ultimately a fellowship of elves, dwarves, humans, and hobbits to do the impossible: destroy the evil ring of power by dropping it in the volcanic pit of Mount Doom in the heart of the evil land of the dark lord, Sauron-Mordor.

The books for five decades were considered unfilmable as live action movies because of the sheer scale of the fantasy-horror-action-adventure nature of the material. Huge battles. Elven cities. Dwarf mines filled with primordial Balrog monsters.

Even more daunting was to keep focus on Tolkien’s story itself - how even the smallest of us, even a lone individual, with bravery and determination and help from a team, can fight the most powerful, darkest sources of evil.

Join us for the movie and trilogy that represents one of the zeniths of cinema craft. In the opera house of Los Angeles cinemas. As it was meant to be seen. An all day experience (if you stay for all three movies) that you will remember the rest of your life.

NOTE: In between each movie, folks with all day passes will be able to explore the theater, go to a floor with drinks, bars, food courts, music, And for the most adventurous, we’ll be throwing an after hours party in secret rooms of the theater almost no one ever gets to see at 10pm to celebrate making it through the full day.

10p THE LORD OF THE RINGS THERE AND BACK AGAIN AFTERPARTY (21+): If you get the All-Access Pass or see a single movie and get the a la carte After Party pass, you get access to our Afterparty: after-hours in the secret rooms of the 1931 Los Angeles Theatre, spaces almost no one gets to see after our Lord of the Rings trilogy screening Sun 9/6/26 @ 10p. Music, drinks, food, dancing, fun, secret tours, and more.

Celebrate the completion of a day of cinema and a journey to Mordor and back with friends, fellow Hobbits, drinks, food, music, dancing, fun, and more.
