What was it like to be queer in the early United States? In this public conversation, Ben Bascom will share insights from his book, Feeling Singular: Queer Masculinities in the Early United States, which examines the history and culture of queerness around the era of figures like Benjamin Franklin and George Washington.
Ben Bascom is Assistant Professor of English at Ball State University, Indiana. He is a scholar and teacher of early and nineteenth-century American literatures. He draws upon a queer studies methodology that follows the relationship between power and desire, gender and sexuality, in American literary cultures. In 2019, he was a National Endowment for the Humanities fellow at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, MA.
Emily Suzanne Johnson is an associate professor of history (BSU) whose work focuses on sexuality, religion, and politics in the twentieth-century United States. She's the author of This is Our Message: Women's Leadership in the New Christian Right.
