“…someday you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again,” wrote C.S. Lewis in his dedication of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Opening with the Edible Book Festival, the exhibition “Feel Your Way Through” features the work of Lou Lovisek and Talia Ryan. As a resident artist at Book Arts, Lovisek printed hand-cut and etched copper plates illustrated with their own short stories. With a love of classic children’s books, Lovisek is engaged in every part of book creation from printing to binding. Talia Ryan’s illustrations are interactive pieces transformed by the touch of the viewer who initiates movement and engages in the narrative. Both artists’ work involves the whimsical stories and vivid characters that embody fairy tales which cultivate our imagination.
Lou Lovisek is a mixed media artist working in Buffalo, NY. Lovisek earned a degree in printmaking from Binghamton University and has a background in sewing, book binding, and botanical illustration. With a love of children’s book illustration, Lovisek writes, illustrates, and creates books handling every part of the process from hand-cutting and etching copper plates, printing, and hand-binding the pages. Illustrating their own short stories, the artwork of the children’s books is whimsical and at times unnerving.
Talia Ryan is a printmaker who explores large scale book arts and movable paper engineering. She has exhibited work at PAUSA Art House, the Castellani Art Museum, and the WNY Book Arts Center, where she was artist-in-residence in 2021. She earned dual BA and MA degrees in studio art and art education from Nazareth University. She now lives in Buffalo, where she works as a public school art teacher and teaching artist in her community.
