Feeding Our Ancestors: A Supper Club for Day of the Dead

Join ITZATNA Arts for a special celebration for Mexican Day of the Dead at Moseley Hive.

We invite you to join us in cooking food for our Ancestor(s)* - our recent dead, long-lost relatives, and everyone in between. Together we will co-create an altar to our Ancestors* and cook their favourite dishes and beverages to feed both them and our living, local community. 

The Day of the Dead (el Día de los Muertos), is a Mexican holiday where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drink and celebration.

This is a collective space for remembering, honouring, and feeding our dearly departed. This is a safe space for anyone navigating the journey and process of death, grief, loss, and bereavement.  

This is a family-friendly event, suitable for all ages. We will watch films and documentaries about Mexican Day of the Dead, including Disney Pixar's Coco (2017). 

We can pay for your food, drink and ingredient expenses. Please provide receipts when you arrive. All food and drink provided for the living is free - donations welcomed. This event is supported by Moseley Hive, Moseley Community Development Trust and Birmingham City Council's 'Pioneer Places' fund.  

We invite you to bring and share:

• A photograph or drawing of your Ancestor(s)*
• Any Objects or Heirlooms that belonged to your Ancestor(s)* when they were alive.
• The food, drink and cooking ingredients of your Ancestor's favourite foods - which we can cook and prepare together in our communal kitchen. 

*ITZATNA define “Ancestors” – as anyone who has had a significant impact or influence on your life. They could be a family member, your neighbour, another artist, or even an activist or campaigner who fought for you or your community’s rights and freedoms. Whose life and work would you wish to pay respects and homage to, and why…?

15:00 - 18:00 = Communal Cooking & Ofrenda Making

18:00 - 21:00 = Supper Club - Communal Dinner & Film Screenings
