About the artists:
Andris Balins and Casey Ruland have been playing music together for over 30 years. They have explored music without confines, inspired by the sounds of our surroundings, listening to the soundtrack of our lives. Buildings and Mountains became a vessel for Andris and Casey to experiment with sound, focusing on the waves, vibrations, and breath that flow all around us. Amidst our ever changing world, Buildings and Mountains focuses on making music that is fluid, constantly changing form and instrumentation. The core of the project focuses on the place humans have on this planet, the eternal push and pull with the world around us. Buildings and Mountains invite you to join in on this musical journey.
Full Load of King is the outlet for Andrew Izold’s varied musical output, which includes styles ranging from experimental pop to electronic ambient to pure noise. FLOK’s live performances focus on improvisational electronic music which ranges from the melodic to the experimental, the style being dependent on the audience’s feedback. FLOK has performed at previous Frequency Fridays events, the Summit Artspace in Akron Ohio as part of the FRESH art exhibition, the Peninsula Art Gallery in Peninsula Ohio, and at the 2023 Cassette Culture Celebration.
Andrew has played drums, bass, and guitar in numerous bands ranging from country to funk to punk. He has recorded and produced numerous releases for Cleveland-based artists such as Open Range Torch Songs and Emerald Frequency. In the late 80’s, Andrew formed the influential duo 10-Speed Guillotine with Jeff Chenault. He still occasionally collaborates with Jeff (and Dan Rockwell) in various settings, including the Circuitry Room project.
Julie Licata (vibraphone, electronics) and Caleb Miller (keyboards, saxophone) are two contemporary musicians residing in Columbus, OH. Their performance perspective comes together in the form of the synthesis of their collective, individual approaches to sound.
Julie Licata is a percussionist/drummer, noisemaker, collaborator, and educator. Her performances range from improvisational soundscapes and works with computer processing, to solo marimba and percussion, chamber ensembles, orchestras, theater pits, Indonesian gamelan and West African drum ensembles. Julie recently accepted the position of Assistant Professor and Director of Percussion at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. As a performer, Julie focuses on promoting emerging composers and seeking new modes of musical expression with particular emphasis on improvisation and the integration of live analog and digital electronics. She recently released an album, resound/unsound, with co-creators Andris Balins and Brett Masteller; the album features percussive improvisations with time lag accumulation, feedback looping, and modular synthesis. Within this musical realm, Julie has performed at the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the US, the International Computer Music Conference, CHIMEFest in Chicago, IL, and numerous new music venues across the US.
Caleb Miller is a keyboardist, saxophonist, composer and educator in Columbus, OH. His work mostly focuses on midwestern perspectives surrounding improvisational-based music and projects. In addition to his personally lead projects (Gault, pincer, Here Here) Caleb plays, writes and subs in many jazz-adjacent projects (Waves De Ache, Yumbambe, Radarhill, Troy Kunkler 4tet), songs-oriented groups (Zack Kouns and His Insatiable Orchestra, Confusions, Francis Bacon Band, Taylor K Conrad), contemporary classical settings (dance accompanist, classical pianist) and other settings (solo work, audio work, Very Much Recordings, music videos, album artwork). As output he is most interested in productions that show a true synthesis of perspectives, sounds, individuals and communities. Music and projects that truly strive for some form of “newness” regardless of the setting, people or situation. Simply stated things that try to be “their own” in some way or another. Caleb also currently operates the Columbus-based recording label Very Much Recordings and teaches in the American public school system.
Doug Leed (aka Dogboy) is an extemporaneous instrumentalist and digital artist from Columbus, OH. Having played guitar in traditional rock bands for over 30 years, he now also plays a combo of touch pad synthesizers, loopers, and effects pedals to create psychedelic and experimental soundscapes. Doug has collaborated with a range of musicians and artists from around Central Ohio; current projects include The Swappers with Jeremy Wendling and Nyctalopia with Brian Werstler and Bill Stoner.
