The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) released its 2025 budget $849 billion and $2.4 Billion for Uncrewed Aircraft Systems. The budget aims to accelerate the development and procurement of combat drones. The Air Force has prioritized the development of uncrewed combat aircraft which they call Collaborative Combat Aircraft. The Air Force has plans to build 1000 of these drones which will fly alongside manned fighters. These increases in spending with what Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III called the “pacing challenge” of China and other threats.
The overall Unmanned Aircraft Systems Market is growing at a CAGR of 14.6% and forecasted to reach $54.2 Billion by 2027. The global military UAS market has grown from $14.54 billion in 2022 to $15.88 billion in 2023 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.2%. The military drone market is expected to grow to $20.64 billion in 2027 at a CAGR of 6.8%.
The rapid growth in uncrewed aircraft systems used for civilian and commercial purposes presents opportunities and challenges for federal agencies. Growth in drone use is expected to increase dramatically in the future. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has forecasted that the commercial drone fleet (drones operated in connection with a business) will reach 828000 and the recreational fleet (drones operated for personal enjoyment. Consequently the FAA is working to address several issues to ensure that drones are safely integrated into the nation’s airspace.
