Reading with Kinsale Drake, m.s. RedCherries and Amber McCrary. An exciting night for Native literature! Friday, April 11th, 2025 at the Museum of Northern Arizona.Kinsale Drake (she/they) is a winner of the 2023 National Poetry Series for her debut poetry collection THE SKY WAS ONCE A DARK BLANKET (University of Georgia Press, 2024). Her work has appeared in Poetry Magazine, Poets.org, Best New Poets, Black Warrior Review, and elsewhere. She is Diné and directs programming for NDN Girls Book Club, which distributes free books to Indigenous youth and communities, and currently lives in Nashville, TN as a graduate fellow at Vanderbilt.
m.s. RedCherries received an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and a JD from Arizona State University College of Law. She is a citizen of the Northern Cheyenne Nation and lives in New York City.
Her debut collection, mother (Penguin Books) was a finalist for the National Book Award.
Amber McCrary is Diné poet and zinester. She is Red House Clan born for Mexican people. Originally from Shonto, Arizona and raised in Flagstaff, Arizona. She earned her BA from Arizona State University in Political Science with a minor in American Indian Studies. She received her MFA in creative writing with an emphasis in poetry at Mills College. McCrary is also the owner and founder of Abalone Mountain Press, a press dedicated to publishing Indigenous voices.
She is a board member for the Northern Arizona Book Festival and Words of the People organizations. She is the Arizona Humanities 2022 Rising Star of the year and a Native Arts and Cultures Foundation LIFT awardee.
Her debut poetry collection, Blue Corn Tongue: Poems in the Mouth of the Desert will be released January 2025 from University of Arizona Press.
