Join us for the second lecture of the 2022 Compelling Voices in Birding and Conservation brought to you by CAS, COS, and the Nature Museum
Walter Kitundu will discuss his work as an instrument builder and performer and share how time spent with the birds impacted his artistic trajectory. This photo-rich presentation will span his early days as a DJ making instruments powered by the elements and eventually by flocks of pigeons, to spending a year with a wild Red-tailed Hawk, and then becoming a raptor researcher along the Pacific flyway. Walter will share the lessons he has learned from birds and reveal large scale projects he is currently working on that honor cultural histories using birdsong, language, storytelling, and volcanic eruptions.
About the speaker:
Walter Kitundu is a Tanzanian-American multidisciplinary artist and educator. He creates sculpture, sound installations, and large scale public art works that address place, history, nature, and community. Kitundu also builds extraordinary musical instruments and mechanical devices when he isn’t obsessively documenting the natural world as a bird photographer. Kitundu is the director of Kitundu Studio, which focuses on the development and installation of public art works. He received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2008.
This event will be held at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. Drinks for purchase begin at 6:00pm, program begins at 6:30pm. The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, the Chicago Ornithological Society, and the Chicago Audubon Society are proud to present the Compelling Voices in Birding and Conservation series.
