We live in a world in crisis. Runaway climate change threatens the very existence of the planet. We’re also seeing a growth in racist forces, a rise in transphobia, institutional sexism and attacks on abortion rights.And here in Britain we face a severe cost of living crisis. With fuel prices rising, inflation soaring and wages stagnating, millions of people are struggling to make ends meet. On university campuses, profit is put ahead of students at every turn.
But that’s not the whole picture. We’ve also seen inspiring resistance. Strikes and working class action are back on the agenda. These come on the back of big movements on the streets in recent years, from BLM to climate strikes to the Palestinian resistance.
This kind of resistance points the way to a different kind of society, where people and the planet are put before profit.
Socialism is the idea that we can build a sustainable society and there is an alternative to the chaos of capitalism and the problems caused by it. It is the vision of a world free of oppression and exploitation.
