Join FCCBHD & Toni Morrison Society 'Bench by the Road' Project to honor the legacy of the iconic author with a special commemorative bench.Welcome to The Friends of the Concord Covered Bridge Historic District and The Toni Morrison Society's Bench by the Road placement ceremony. Join us for a special in-person gathering at the Silver Comet Trail-Concord Road Entrance.
This dedication honors the legacy of Toni Morrison and pays tribute to the formerly enslaved and freed persons of Cobb County after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Come be a part of this meaningful initiative and pay tribute to a literary icon and the formerly enslaved Matilda Ruff and her three children who lived near this site. She represents over 3,000 enslaved in Cobb County who were liberated on Juneteenth.
As visitors, you can sit and reflect upon their lives as Toni Morrison once mused, that there was no place for her to contemplate the lives of the enslaved. The small green-space surrounding the Bench will henceforth be known as Matilda’s Garden for everyone to experience a meditative peace.
