Skill Level: Beginner
Capture the spirit of wood-crafting without felling a single tree! Faux bois fools the eye by imitating the rustic texture and characteristics of wood. From the French word for false wood, the process refers to the artistic imitation of wood in various media. In this class, students will be introduced to a unique way of crafting with gourds.
To create your unique piece we will focus on the elements of design and color. After selecting your gourd, you will learn proper cleaning, sanding, and leveling techniques to prepare your “canvas”. Carving to simulate burls, decay, and other interesting markings will be done using burrs and a flex shaft. Intuition goes a long way with this project, so you can’t make a mistake!
You will have a choice of wood colors to choose from according to your personal taste. We will then explore techniques for sealing your finished piece. Each participant will leave with a completed art piece to proudly display in his/her home. No previous experience with gourds is necessary.
All materials are included in the tuition.
