The story of the doctor Faust and the demon Mephisto is a core cultural story. Making a deal with the Devil is proverbial; we learn the outline of the tale and its moral texture before we ever hear its name. And so we’ve been making movies about Faust for as long as we’ve been making movies. Whenever a new art form is invented, Faust will presumably get translated over. Did anybody make a Faust Quibi?
Doesn’t matter now; Quibi is dead and Faust lives on. Mobilizing the full resources of the Ufa Studios, F. W. Murnau (Nosferatu, Sunrise) orchestrated a colossal adaptation of Goethe’s version of the story that ranks alongside Fritz Lang’s Metropolis as the greatest achievements of the German silent cinema. Gösta Ekman stars as the titular alchemist who, struggling with his faith amidst a devastating plague, is offered the power to cure and the gift of youth in exchange for his soul. As the diabolical Mephisto, Emil Jannings delivers a performance of operatic scale and intensity, by turns charming, comical, and horrific. Tampa Theatre is proud to present Murnau’s astonishing Expressionist masterpiece with live accompaniment from artist-in-residence Steven Ball, on our mighty Wurlitzer theatre organ!
