About this Event

Fatos Aslanoglu: Islamic Binding and Decorative Illumination

Lecture explores the techniques of Islamic bookbinding and decorative illumination, with a focus on the distinctive features of Islamic manuscripts and the artistic principles of illumination. It examines how craftsmanship, ornament, and functionality came together in the making of books.

Drawing on the Islamic manuscripts displayed in the exhibition, the lecture will demonstrate these techniques in practice, providing a deeper understanding of the materials and processes involved.

UNFOLDING THE ISLAMIC BOOK

An exhibition accompanied by a special interactive lecture series presented by SGS GALLERY

The series is inspired by the traditional Islamic understanding of the book as a vessel of transmitted knowledge (‘ilm), where knowledge is passed not only through text, but through the hands and skills of the craftsmen, calligraphers, illuminators, papermakers, and binders who make the book possible.

SGS Gallery invites visitors to explore the remarkable processes behind these extraordinary books: from the preparation of paper and pigments to calligraphy, illumination, and binding. Together, the lectures and exhibition encourage visitors to “unfold” the Islamic book, discovering the traditional techniques, materials, and skills behind its creation.
