By any measure this is a golden age when it comes to women jazz vocalists, and the most extraordinary young singer to emerge this decade is 24-year-old Samara Joy, winner of the 2023 Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Jazz Vocal Album (she picked up a third Grammy in February for Best Jazz Performance for "Tight"). Impressive as they are, awards don’t begin to tell the story of this voluptuously talented artist. With a voice as warm and plush as crushed velvet and a deeply informed repertoire of under-covered jazz tunes and American Songbook gems, she’s an enthralling performer still marveling at her sudden international stature. Even as she holds the stage with maturity and self-possession, Joy is growing by leaps and bounds. The power of her music flows not so much from her bountiful virtuosity as from the open-hearted soul, which has drawn listeners from far beyond jazz’s usual precincts. Doors will open at 5 pm to allow ample time for you to stroll the grounds and experience this unique space.
This concert will take place outdoors at Kendall-Jackson’s beautiful grounds and on the lawn with both theater-style seating and blanket lawn seating, ticket purchase depending. Please dress for changing weather conditions.
