About this Event
Learn basic bonsai techniques to start transforming plants into bonsai. Learn why it is important to have a good soil mix, root-prune, repot, and choose the right angles when repotting. Take this knowledge home and apply it to other plants as well.
In this class we will work on the Buddhist Pine also known as 'Podrik' (here at the bonsai shop).
I'm Podrik the Buddhist Pine Tree, native to Southern Japan and China. These trees are about 15 years old.
I thrive in part sun. Keep me in temperatures above 55F all year, and away from heaters and air conditioners. In winter it's best to keep me in a cool spot in the house, away from any heaters.
To water, submerge my pot up to the rim for 5-10 minutes, and drain thoroughly. Do this about once every 5-7 days or when my pot starts to get light again. Water well when very hot or dry.
Symbolism: The Buddhist Pine is highly regarded in Asia where you'll find them near temples and sacred places because of their strong spiritual significance. Thought to be harbingers of good fortune, this tree symbolizes growth and transformation. Its Chi is associated with Thunder, thought to represent momentum, energy, and adaptability.
This class is for beginners to intermediate.

Materials Provided: one bonsai tree, one medium handmade bonsai planter, soil, decorative rocks, necessary tools for repotting. Other materials on site available for purchase.

Ayanna Rivera grew up right here in Ft. Greene– a block away from Dandy Farmer! Aside from being our shop apprentice, she is a visual artist with a natural love and affinity for plants.
