BARKING SPHINX PRESENTS UNWRITTEN WEEKEND FESTIVAL, with Farida Amadou (Brussels), Radwan Ghazi Moumneh (Montreal), EarthBall (Van/Nanaimo).
About this Event

This evening will bring together three projects spanning continents and approaches to experimental music and noise.

It will be a unique concert, presenting the North American premiere of Farida Amadou’s new solo project and the Vancouver premiere of Radwan Ghazi Moumneh’s new solo work under his own name, following more than a decade focused on his multimedia duo Jerusalem In My Heart. A few months ago, Earthball released a new album to critical acclaim and was named #2 on The Quietus Albums of the Year list.

The night will move between Earthball’s improvised psychedelic explorations, Farida Amadou’s textured interplay of West African rhythm samples, melodic fragments, and voice, and Radwan Ghazi Moumneh’s integration of buzuk (Lebanese lute) and Arabic modal singing with electronics, synths, and effects. An experience of different facets of sound experimentation, a questioning of contemporary practices and tradition, and an effort to push boundaries.

Farida Amadou

If there's one musician in the last decade that you may hear in wildly diverse musical contexts it is Belgian electric bassist and sound sculptor Farida Amadou. Not only can you enjoy the unerringly skillful command she has over her instrument but also the transformative power to reinterpret and expand her material in spontaneous and unconventional ways.

Known for her raw, intuitive approach to improvisation, she has become a vital force in experimental music, collaborating with artists such as Thurston Moore, Peter Brötzmann, and Moor Mother. Blending free jazz, noise, and deep rhythmic structure, Amadou creates immersive soundscapes that balance intensity with clarity.

Her solo work, including the acclaimed When It Rains It Pours (2024), showcases her unique ability to shape spontaneous sonic worlds with power, precision, and emotional depth.

For this show, she will present the North American Premiere of a brand new solo creation — an exploration of improvised textures built around West African rhythm samples, melodic fragments, and voice. Known for her deep-rooted energy in noise and free improvisation, Amadou opens a new chapter, weaving ancestral echoes with radical sonic freedom.

Radwan Ghazi Moumneh

Radwan Ghazi Moumneh is a Lebanese-Canadian musician and producer based in Tiohtiá:ke/Montréal. He blends Arabic song traditions with electroacoustic buzuq (Lebanese lute) and electronics to create music that reimagines contemporary Arabic sound and culture.

In the early 2010s, he founded the multimedia project Jerusalem In My Heart (JIMH), which has toured internationally and released four acclaimed albums on Constellation Records. For JIMH, Moumneh composes all the music and collaborates with a filmmaker. Their 2021 album Qalaq features artists such as Moor Mother, Tim Hecker, Lucrecia Dalt, and Greg Fox; framed by Moumneh’s spoken and sung Arabic, buzuq, and sound design, Qalaq is a visceral and haunting work of contemporary electronics, Arabic songcraft, and sound art.

Outside of JIMH, Moumneh co-founded the legendary Hotel2Tango studio in 2006, where he has produced and recorded over 200 albums. He is currently working on his first solo album under his name.

EarthBall

EarthBall are a psychedelic free jazz ensemble from Nanaimo and Vancouver, Canada.

Their music is fully improvised, drawing from experimental rock, free improvisation, post punk and more. Live performances are dense, dynamic, and elastic, shifting between collective surges, fractured song-like forms, and extended passages shaped by close listening and group instinct. Since forming, Earth Ball have quickly established an international profile through touring and releases with the UK label Upset The Rhythm. They received strong critical attention from outlets including The Wire and The Quietus, and toured internationally including two appearances at Le Guess Who? Festival.
