Friday: Active Counseling Interventions: Adding Play and Adventure Techniques to Your Practice

In this exciting (and probably loud) workshop, participants will get to experience a wide variety of fun activities that they can use with play therapy clients. Through these playful interventions, clients can gain a sense of belonging, develop positive identities, increase self-esteem, build meaningful relationships, and practice appropriate expression of feelings. Special emphasis will be placed on developing professionals’ understanding of selecting, sequencing, leading, and processing of adventure play therapy techniques. Through lecture, discussion, but primarily through participation in adventure therapy activities, participants will be invited to consider how adventure play therapy techniques may be applied in their current and anticipated counseling settings. Participants are strongly encouraged to dress for movement and fun.

After the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Select adventure play therapy techniques to gain a sense of belonging.
  2. Select adventure play therapy techniques to develop positive identities.
  3. Select adventure play therapy techniques to increase self-esteem.
  4. Select adventure play therapy techniques to build meaningful relationships.
  5. Select adventure play therapy techniques to practice appropriate expression of feelings.
  6. Process adventure play therapy techniques.

Saturday Morning: Ethical Decision-Making in Play Therapy: Models and Applications

In this experiential workshop, participants will review ethical theories and models of ethical decision-making relevant to child counseling and play therapy applications. Special emphasis will be placed on developing professionals’ understanding of decision-making processes used in arriving at ethical courses of action in three primary areas of emphasis in professional ethics codes. These areas include a) informed consent, b) confidentiality, and c) competence. Using case studies and vignettes, professionals will be invited to consider what might be the best course of action in a variety of child counseling and play therapy scenarios presenting ethical dilemmas.

After the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Apply the ethical construct of informed consent across a variety of play therapy settings.
  2. Apply the ethical construct of competence across a variety of play therapy settings.
  3. Apply the ethical construct of confidentiality across a variety of play therapy settings.
  4. Apply a play therapy ethical decision-making model to a variety of ethical dilemmas.

Saturday Afternoon Break-out Sessions featuring:

Play Therapy Burnout – Anticipate it, Avoid it, Guard against it – to be a better Play Therapist (and happier and healthier!) with Jeffrey S. Ashby, PhD, ABPP, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor™

Play therapists consistently extend themselves on behalf of the clients they serve. In the hectic world of providing therapy and consultation to clients, play therapists often neglect their own well-being. The results can include vicarious traumatization, extreme stress, and burnout. In this experiential workshop we’ll learn and practice self-care techniques that can assist the play therapist in maintaining the ethical mandate of emotional competence in practice, have more fun, and be a better play therapist.

After the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Define burnout and discuss its relationship to play therapy competence.
  2. Define self-care and discuss its relationship to play therapy competence.
  3. Evaluate when there is a need for self-care.
  4. Demonstrate three play therapy self-care applications.

No Fuss, No Muss: Fun Play Therapy Supervision Strategies with Juliet Fortino, MC, LPC, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor™ | Advanced, Play Therapy Special Topics

Ever find yourself stuck in a rut and not know how to engage your play therapy supervisees? This workshop will explore fun, play therapy activities that you can utilize during supervision without needing a lot of “stuff.”

After the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the three roles of the supervisor in play therapy supervision
  2. Explain the importance of utilizing play therapy techniques in the supervision process
  3. Utilize at least 3 play therapy activities for use in supervision/consultation

Exploring the Foundations, Principles, and The “Four Pillars” of Child-Centered Play Therapy with Brenna Hicks, PhD, Registered Play Therapist™, LMHC-S | Beginner-Intermediate, Play Therapy Seminal or Historically Significant Theories

An exploration into Child-Centered Play Therapy, including the foundations, core beliefs, philosophy, applications, skills, and techniques. This program will include discussions, examples, role-playing, and diagrams to allow for deep processing and understanding. A basic discussion of the history of the theory will also be included.

After the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the basic beliefs and philosophy of Child-Centered Play Therapy.
  2. Explain the applications of Child-Centered skills.
  3. Discuss the “Four Pillars” of Play Therapy

Using Expressive Arts within Play Therapy with Aimee Jennings, MS, LMHC, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor ™ and Sean Jennings, PsyD, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor™ | Beginner, Play Therapy Special Topics

This workshop will focus on the incorporation of expressive arts within the context of play therapy organized through a neurobiological lens. Sand Tray play therapy will be a primary focus, and other experiential exercises will include movement, rhythm, drama and poetry. Practical skills related to utilizing expressive arts within play therapy, as well as suggestions for further trainings and skill building will be addressed. This workshop will touch upon the neurobiological and developmental aspects of using expressive arts within play therapy.

After the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the difference between directive and nondirective approaches to sand therapies.
  2. Briefly describe and discuss the basic developmental considerations, with a focus on the neurobiological importance and benefit of using expressive arts within play therapy.
  3. Analyze and discuss the personal experience of using expressive arts and the implications for the practice of play therapy.

Play Therapy with the Brain in Mind with Rachel Scharlepp, PhD, LCSW, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor™ | Intermediate, Play Therapy Special Topics

Research shows that play therapy is an effective way to treat children with various presenting problems. Why does the therapeutic use of play work? Dr. Scharlepp delves into the biological basis of play therapy to find the answer to why play therapy works, as well as answers how play therapy works and what about play therapy promotes neuronal growth and strengthens adaptive neural circuitry.

After the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Apply the fundamentals of neurology to the play therapy process.
  2. Demonstrate the impact of play on brain activity through neurosensorimotor activities.
  3. Identify the core tenets of play therapy and be able to link them to neurology learned in Objective #1.
  4. Analyze the impact of epigenetics in the play room and within the therapeutic relationship with caregivers

Cancellation Policy:

$50 is non-refundable. Written cancellations received 30 days or more prior to the start of the conference will receive a full refund of the balance minus $50. Cancellations less than 30 days prior to the start of the conference will forfeit the total cost of registration.

In the very unlikely event that the workshop must be cancelled or postponed by the organizers, the Florida Association for Play Therapy will provide a full refund of the registration fees.

6 hours of continuing education are available each day.

The Florida Association for Play Therapy (FAPT) is an approved provider for the Association for Play Therapy to offer continuing education specific to play therapy. APT Approved Provider 02-115. Play therapy credit will not be awarded to non-mental health professionals. FAPT is approved by the Florida Department of Health under FL Statute 491 to offer continuing education for Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Mental Health Counselors. Provider Number BAP-50-10520 expires 03/31/2023. FAPT is approved by the Florida Department of Health under FL Statute 490 to offer continuing education for Psychologists. Provider Number BAP-50-10520 expires 05/31/2022.

About our presenters...

Jeffrey S. Ashby, PhD, ABPP, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor™ - is a Professor in the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services at Georgia State University. He is the Director of the Georgia State Play Therapy Training Institute, a Licensed Psychologist, and a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor. In addition, he is the Co-Director of Georgia State’s Center for the Study of Stress, Trauma, and Resilience and a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology. Jeff has authored over 100 professional journal articles and book chapters and regularly presents at professional conferences. Jeff lives in Atlanta with his wife and dog Zoey, with occasional visits from his four children (a constant adventure).

Juliet Fortino, MC, LPC, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor™ - works with Children and Families involved with CPS and the various child mental health agencies in the Tucson community in a private practice setting. She has 25 years experience working with child trauma, abuse, attachment, and play therapy.

Brenna Hicks, PhD, Registered Play Therapist™, LMHC-S - is a licensed, private-practice play therapist and is the owner of The Kid Counselor Center and The Family Counselor Center in the Tampa Bay area. The centers serve up to 225 families per week, offering counseling for the family at every phase of life. Brenna has been blogging and podcasting about play therapy and parenting since 2006, and has been featured in The New York Times, and on CNN and iVillage. She teaches play therapy courses for the University of Wyoming, and recently published her first book, Device Detox: A Parent’s Guide To Reducing Usage, Preventing Tantrums, And Raising Happier Kids. A native Floridian, she loves the beach, the sun, and Rays baseball with her husband and son.

Aimee Jennings, MS, LMHC, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor ™ - is a licensed mental health counselor, RPT-S, certified SandTray therapist and has been in the field 30 years. She has been in private practice over 17 years working with children, adolescents, and adults. Aimee utilizes expressive arts within counseling, though she works with a variety of clients she has a deep interest in working with highly sensitive individuals.

Sean Jennings, PsyD, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor™ - is a licensed psychologist, RPT-S, certified SandTray therapist and has been in the field of psychology for 33 years. He has run a fulltime private practice for over 20 years working with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. Sean utilizes expressive arts within therapy and is currently pursuing his credentials in Psychodrama.

The Jennings' have been practicing nondirective / noninterpretative SandTray for over 20 years and teaching SandTray for over ten years. They consider themselves fortunate to be co-therapists with couples, co-facilitate SandTray workshops, and co-teach a graduate class in Expressive Arts Therapies at Stetson University

Rachel Scharlepp, PhD, LCSW, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor™ - is co-owner of PlayBig. She has been working clinically with children ages 0-18 years old for over 15 years. She is licensed by the state of Florida as a clinical social worker, has earned advanced graduate training in infant mental health and adoption, and is a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor. Rachel earned her PhD in Combined Doctoral Program in Counseling Psychology and School Psychology at Florida State University and is currently working towards licensure as a psychologist. Rachel has specialized training in assessing and treating trauma, adoption, autism, and mental health disorders. She is a Clinical Social Work and Mental Health Counseling Internship Site Supervisor, Qualified Supervisor of Registered Social Work and Mental Health Counseling Interns, is a past president of the Big Bend Chapter of the Florida Association for Play Therapy, and is a graduate of APT’s Leadership Academy.
