About this Event

Welcome to Season 4 of the Fantasy Homebrew League homebrew competition - hosted by the Brewly Homebrew Club!

Think you make good beer? Come and prove your mettle by competing against other homebrewers in this unique fantasy-football-style competition where all the ingredients you brew with will have to be “drafted” during a live draft event.

Important Dates

Friday, August 19 @ 7:00 pm – Fantasy Homebrew League Draft at Bookhouse Brewing

Friday, October 14 by 7:00 pm – FHL brews are due at the Cleveland Brew Shop

Cleveland Beer Week, Oct. 14 - Oct. 23 – Fantasy Homebrew League Tasting Party & Awards Ceremony

The Fantasy Homebrew League Draft

Purchasing a ticket will reserve you a spot in the FHL Draft on Friday, August 19th. Our Draft will be held on the Bookhouse Brewing patio. Only one ticket is required per team.

The rules are simple: any ingredient that goes in your beer must be selected during the draft process, and you must select and brew with at least one of each of the following:

  • Base malt
  • Specialty malt
  • Hops
  • Yeast
  • Adjunct

We will be distributing a list of all draftable ingredients a few days before the draft. While you’re free to get your ingredients anywhere you’d like, we recommend you shop local at The Cleveland Brew Shop.

What will your strategy be? Mosaic hops in the first round? Maybe a lager yeast is most valuable? Wait until the end to draft a base malt?

"I knew it was a 'kicker year'"

FHL Tasting Party & Awards Ceremony

Based on a successful event last year, we're happy to announce that we will have a full fledged tasting party and award ceremony at the Cleveland Brew Shop to crown the Season 4 champion!

The exact date and time of our Tasting Party & Awards Ceremony is still TBD. However, our plan is to have it coincide with Cleveland Beer Week, which will take place October 14th thru October 23rd this year. In the past it has been on weekday evening.

As an FHL participant, you will be the first to know when a date and time are set.

What's New This Year?

Our Draft event will feature a brand new location this year: Bookhouse Brewing. The folks at Bookhouse generously offered their patio to host the draft. Food will be provided!

MINOR RULE CHANGE: You must draft and use at least one (1) ingredient from each category in your beer, however, there is no minimum amount/quantity required for each ingredient.

PRIZES: Top 3 entries as determined by beer judges will receive a medal and various other prizes. Grand prize last year was a brand new electric homebrewing system (~$1k value).

Top entry as voted by the public at the tasting event will also receive recognition and a prize. Last year this was a brand new stainless steel fermentation vessel (~$800 value).

FAQs

How many people can be one team?

Teams can be comprised of one or two people. Only one ticket is required per team. We ask that you purchase a One-Person Team ticket or a Two-Person Team ticket based on the number of people on your team. If you have more than two people on a team, please email us in advance.

What does buying a ticket get me?

By buying the ticket, you are securing a spot for your team in the Fantasy Homebrew League Draft. The money will go towards the running the Draft at Bookhouse and towards medals/prizes for the winners.

Why are there two types of tickets this year?

The two types of tickets are meant to cover the expenses of running the Draft. In addition to material costs like the draft board and the prizes for the winners, this year we'll be providing food to the participants at the Draft. The two types of tickets will ensure that we get an accurate headcount of how many people will be there at the Draft event.

When do I brew the beer with the drafted ingredients?

There is no official brew day for this competition, meaning you can brew your beer whenever you’d like. Just make sure it’s ready for judging by Friday, October 14th.

What should I brew?

That's entirely up to you! The only limit is your imagination.

How do I submit my beer for judging?

You'll need to turn in two (2) bottles of your beer for judging. The size of the bottles doesn’t really matter but we’ll need at least two separate containers for judging. Please drop off the beer at The Cleveland Brew shop on or before Friday, October 14th.

Are there minimum age requirements to enter the event?

Must be 21 to participate.
