Join botanist and environmental educator Brooke McMinn to hear a tale about the smallest mystical woodland creatures that often go unnoticed (especially by grown-ups). Use your imagination and natural materials to build miniature homes that might entice them out of hiding for a visit! Individuals can build a structure on their own or families can work collaboratively on one. Parents should craft alongside children under 12, helping them master scissors and glue guns while honing their engineering skills. Fee includes storytime, construction guidance, a base for one structure, various other natural materials (moss, bark, sticks, leaves, acorns, etc.), and tools. Feel free to bring small decorations from home to add to your creation.
Instructor bio:
Brooke McMinn is a botanist who specializes in exploring intersections of plant ecology and human society. A graduate of Rutgers University’s Department of Plant Science and former plant breeding researcher there, she has served as Executive Director for the NJ Agricultural Society, President of the Environmental Education Association of Alabama, Director of Education and Visitor Experience for Birmingham Botanical Gardens, and Horticultural Agent for Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Burlington County. Currently, Brooke works as an independent consultant on various conservation and design projects addressing challenges like climate change and biodiversity loss for a range of clients, from small private gardens to large land trusts.
