Meet Fanny Mendelssohn. You'll probably know her younger brother Felix, from nineteenth-century smash hits like 'The Wedding March'. Felix was such a musical sensation that Queen Victoria requested a personal concert and even sung her favorite of his compositions: ‘Italien’. The only problem was Felix didn’t write it. The piece of music was Fanny’s, quietly published under her brother's name.
So - when Fanny intercepts a letter inviting Felix to go back to England and premiere a new orchestral work for the Queen, Fanny decides to hide the letter and take her rightful place at the palace…!
Fanny is a joyful and irreverent comedy celebrating music, family and – at last – the work of a composer overlooked because of her sex.
📍 Venue Description: The King's Head Theatre is a celebrated fringe venue in north London, known for its intimate setting, bold programming, and rich legacy of nurturing emerging talent.
Founded in 1970, it was the first pub theatre established in London since Shakespeare’s day, and continues to host an eclectic mix of drama, opera, comedy and new writing. Located in the heart of Islington, the King's Head Theatre is housed in a Victorian pub brimming with old-world charm—complete with gas lamps, a coal fire, and one of the UK’s last remaining pre-decimal tills.
Over the years, King’s Head Theatre London has become synonymous with daring, progressive productions and a vibrant community of artists. The venue’s cosy atmosphere creates a powerful connection between audience and performance, making it a unique and memorable night out in the capital.
### The History of King's Head Theatre
The King’s Head Theatre occupies a site that has been home to a public house since the 1500s. Its name is rumoured to stem from Henry VIII, who allegedly stopped for a pint on his way to see his mistress. In 1970, Dan Crawford transformed a back room of the pub into a performance space, creating London’s first new pub theatre in centuries.
Crawford’s tenure lasted 35 years, during which the King’s Head Theatre gained a reputation for launching careers and championing new voices. In 2010, UpClose Productions took up residence and continued this tradition, producing acclaimed operas and bold new plays. Today, King’s Head Theatre London remains a hotbed for emerging creatives, with many alumni now working at leading UK institutions like the National Theatre, RSC, and the Globe.
