FAN-tastic Butterflies Family Friendly Activities

In support of our community partners at the Rye Arts Center who will be unveiling butterfly-themed art sculptures for their 2024 RyesAbove: A Transformational Public Art Project, the Rye Historical Society celebrates the spring season with a new temporary exhibition featuring items from our extensive collection.

All items on display from the historical society’s collection showcases a connection with these colorful flying insects - especially our significant array of fans featuring distinctive butterfly designs.

A paper fan-making arts and crafts activity is available in the Square House Council Room. This engaging worksho will invites children and adults alike to delve into the art of paper fan making, and provide a hands-on experience that connects participants with the historical and communicative aspects of fan use.

Through this activity, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about and practice the subtle signals and secret language of fan gestures, a form of non-verbal communication that was popular in Victorian times.
