About this Event

Family Systems Theory is an important part of a theological education and preparation for leadership roles and is an area that often goes underexplored. Bowen Family Systems Theory looks at the family as the core emotional unit where we first experience and learn patterns of responding to anxiety that transfer over to our interactions with other social groups. In a pair of introductory forums on the topic on October 1 and October 15, 2024, The Rev. Dr. Jacques Hadler, Professor Emeritus of VTS will discuss concepts of acute and chronic anxiety, self-differentiation and our emotional and intellectual guidance systems.

Dr. Hadler served as Director of Field Education at VTS for seventeen years and taught courses in Practical Theology. He is an expert in Bowen Family Systems Theory. His current ministry consists primarily of offering spiritual direction and coaching to clergy and seminarians and clergy colleague groups, as well as consultation with congregations and a Tanzanian bishop. He also continues in a teaching role on family systems theory and case studies at Bunda Bible College in Tanzania and in the Doctor of Ministry program at VTS.
