Family Shadow Puppetry Workshop with Manual Cinema

In this workshop, students will create their own short puppet animation using the paper puppet techniques from . The students will see up close demonstrations of the paper puppets from the show and learn Manual Cinema's puppetry and visual storytelling techniques.

All participants will create their own short monster paper puppet shows with simple classroom materials.

All ages are welcome, but this workshop is designed for families and children 5+

$5 for Mechanics' Hall Members, $7 for General Admission

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Manual Cinema is an Emmy Award-winning performance collective, design studio, and film/video production company founded in 2010 by Drew Dir, Sarah Fornace, Ben Kauffman, Julia Miller, and Kyle Vegter. Manual Cinema combines handmade shadow puppetry, cinematic techniques, and innovative sound and music to create immersive stories for stage and screen.

Using vintage overhead projectors, multiple screens, puppets, actors, live feed cameras, multi-channel sound design, and live music, Manual Cinema transforms the experience of attending the cinema and imbues it with liveness, ingenuity, and theatricality.

PARKING & TRANSPORTATION

The Greater Portland Metro’s Congress & Casco Street Stop is directly in front of our building, served by routes 1, 7, 8, and 9B.

Parking is available at the Arts District Garage, which has entrances on Casco and Brown Street, with a rate of $5 per hour. Metered street parking is available on Congress, Casco, Cumberland, Free Street, and other nearby streets. Free hourly street parking is available between Parris and Alder Street.

To enter our building, patrons will need to navigate a single step. There is a wheelchair-accessible elevator and a ramp.
