Family Mass for The Fourth Sunday after Trinity (St Peter & St Paul))

The theme of our worship is the reward of selfless giving. In humility and honesty we reflect on how this applies to us and pray about how our words and actions affect those around us.
Hymns: NH&WS 175, 158, 10, 326
The First Reading and Psalm are only used at the said 9 o'clock service this Sunday
[First Reading Jeremiah 28:5-9
Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord; and the prophet Jeremiah said, ‘Amen! May the Lord do so; may the Lord fulfil the words that you have prophesied, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house of the Lord, and all the exiles. But listen now to this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet.’
Psalm 125
R. Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion that stands for ever.
Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,
which cannot be moved, but stands fast for ever.
As the hills stand about Jerusalem, so the Lord stands round about his people,
from this time forth for evermore. R.
The sceptre of wickedness shall not hold sway
over the land allotted to the righteous,
lest the righteous turn their hands to evil. R.
Do good, O Lord, to those who are good,
and to those who are true of heart.
Those who turn aside to crooked ways the Lord shall take away with the evildoers;
but let there be peace upon Israel. R. ]
Second Reading 2 Timothy 4:6-8,17-18
My life is already being poured away as a libation, and the time has come for me to be gone. I have fought the good fight to the end; I have run the race to the finish; I have kept the faith; all there is to come now is the crown of righteousness reserved for me, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that Day; and not only to me but to all those who have longed for his Appearing.
The Lord stood by me and gave me power, so that through me the whole message might be proclaimed for all the pagans to hear; and so I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from all evil attempts on me, and bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

You are Peter the rock, on which I will build my Church. And the gates of hell can never hold out against it.
Gospel Matthew 16:13-19
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi he put this question to his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say he is John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ ‘But you,’ he said ‘who do you say I am?’ Then Simon Peter spoke up, ‘You are the Christ,’ he said ‘the Son of the living God.’ Jesus replied, ‘Simon son of Jonah, you are a happy man! Because it was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you but my Father in heaven. So I now say to you: You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church. And the gates of the underworld can never hold out against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth shall be considered loosed in heaven.’
Intercessions
We pray for confidence and faith to take the Good News out into the world with no expectation of any reward, but with faith in God’s grace and assurance that we have a part to play in God’s plan.
We pray for those who reject the word when they hear it, who meet Christ’s disciples with hostility and hatred. May the Holy Spirit soften their souls, enabling them to receive and welcome the word of God.
We pray for the Church; that those who form the body of Christ might be inspired and uplifted in their outreach and mission, and that their love of God might in turn inspire and uplift others.
We remember those who have died recently and those we have known and loved whose years mind falls this week: Florence Watson, Christine Hopper, Amy Haskew, Theresa Crosby, Boris Petrovs, Cathleen Gillard, Arthur Wiles, Freddie Curbeson, Kenneth Hatwell.
