About this Event

In this afternoon talk we will be joined by Warren Grynberg as he discusses his Holocaust family history. His father, Herschel Grynberg, spent his early years in Losice schtetl, Poland before being imprisoned in Siberia in 1942. He was later released into the Anders Army, and suffered in a military training camp in Scotland at the hands of antisemetic Polish soldiers.

One hundred and fifty Jewish soldiers escaped their clutches and went absent without leave boarding a train to London. Waiting for them were young Zionists who hid them away until Sir Winston Churchill, during a Parliamentary debate, ordered them into the British Army.

When a war had ended Herschel returned to London to settle, gained British nationality and spent the rest of his working life as a tailor in the East End of London. Herschel passed away on the 15th September 2008.

About the Speaker

He later enrolled in a three year course with the London Tourist Board and became a professional London Blue Badge Tour Guide and Lecturer. He now guides visitors and tourists inside and outside of London.
