A special family edition geared toward families with kids! All ages are welcome. Identifying and eating invasive plants, made fun!
About this Event

LET'S EAT SOME WEEDS!

So many parents have asked about bringing their kids on my walks, and they are ALWAYS welcome, but usually most everyone else are adults. So I thought... let's create a special event focused on the kids!

This means:

  • shorter/easier walk.
  • stroller friendly (please tell me if you will use a stroller as it determines the path we'll take).
  • kid playground time at the end.

**All children must be accomanied by an adult--a parent, uncle, family friend etc. One adult can accompany multiple kids, but this isn't a drop off day camp.

The last kid-focused foraging walk I did had the parents saying it was the most vegetables they'd gotten their kids to eat in weeks! It's fun and important for kids to see the connections between the food growing in the ground and our dinner plate at home, and even the kids who said "I don't like salads" seemed to enjoy it.

See you and your family there!

Event description:

Winter and the rainy season bring the return of non-native, and invasive weeds that crowd out the native plants that are extra beneficial to our local ecosystem. But many of them are also edible! By eating them we can help the natural ecosystem--from bugs to birds to bears--survive a little easier.

In this workshop and easy hike we will learn about both the native and invasive plants growing throughout Elysian Park, practice plant identification skills to know what is edible and what is not, gather invasive edible plants along a easy 1 mile walk, and at the end put them all together to enjoy a wild, foraged, hyper-locally-sourced salad.

**NOTE: I've recently changed all my events to a donation/honor system. I want to keep making environmental education for all, but just a word that this is how I pay my bills too! You'll be receiving 2 hours of education and entertainment, foraging supplies, a digital foraging plant ID book I wrote and designed, and a big bowl of salad at the end. Thank you for your support!

Jason Wise (aka ) is a certified California naturalist, outdoor/online environmental educator, a native plant daddy, and prolific tree hugger with a Master's in Environmental Policy. He teaches about native and invasive plants, connected ecosystems, the ecological history of California, and how we can all leave it better. Let's grow community together from nature.
