Admission to the immersive Mezmereyz Galleries is sold separately.
Program Description:
Bring the whole family to Algorithms + Assemblage, a free Family Day exploring the creative connections between art, language, technology, and hands-on making.
Algorithms + Assemblage, invites families to experiment, create, and discover how artists turn ideas, instructions, words, and everyday materials into works of art.
This Family Day is inspired by contemporary digital artists Nathaniel Stern and Sasha Stiles who collaborate with computers by writing code, and their exhibition Generation to Generation: Conversing with Kindred Technologies.
Family Day Activities:
Write a simple algorithm, a set of steps that tells you how to do something or solve a problem
Create an assemblage sculpture using discarded materials, then add it to a temporary museum display or take it home
Write poetry or complete a wordplay activity inspired by works on view
Shape and sculpt a miniature artwork with air-dry clay using language prompts
Create a miniature plate or bowl in air-dray clay inspired by the work of Pablo Picasso
Meet a Robot:
Families and children of all ages can also take part in live demonstrations about artificial intelligence, creativity, and learning led by Jeongki Lim, Dean of Parsons School of Design at The New School. Participants will learn about AI by meeting and a live robot.
Demonstrations will take place in Classroom One at:
11:30 AM – 11:50 PM
12:30 PM – 12:50 PM
1:30 PM – 1:50 PM
For Girl Scouts:
Girl Scouts can complete the steps and requirements for earning:
Coding Basics (Badge 1) for Brownies and Juniors
Scribe Badge for Juniors
Art and Design Badge for Brownies
Note: Badges are not provided. Supplies and steps for earning badges can be fulfilled with these Family Day activities. Scouts are encouraged to wear Girl Scout gear, though it is not required, and should check in at the special Girl Scout station.
