About this Event

Prerequisites for this Class:

This is an intermediate to advanced-level class. Beginners should not register for this class. Even if you have some painting experience, please email [email protected] before registering. The instructor will confirm whether this class is appropriate for you or if you would be better suited to start with Intro to Watercolour Painting.



CLASS MATERIALS LIST:

6-8 Van Gogh Watercolour Tubes: Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Deep, Orange, Magenta, Red, Cobalt Blue or Ultramarine Deep, English Red/Red Ochre, Payne’s Grey, Ivory Black, Titanium White.

1 Strathmore watercolour Paper pad (8.5” x 11”, or 9” x 12”)

Brushes: 4 small/medium-sized brushes, starting from #1-2 to #6 – small round-tipped brushes and bigger flat brushes. (Princeton, Velvetouch, any other brand)

Colour pencils: Prismacolour, Lyra, or Faber-Castell pencils (different colours), 5-7 for every student.

Optional Supplies

Ecoline pre-diluted watercolour (1-3 bottles of “Earthy” tones, like Warm Grey, Yellow

Ochre, Red Ochre, Cold Grey, etc.)

Advanced Watercolour Techniques: Colour, Atmosphere & Creative Expression


Take your watercolour skills to the next level in this engaging 8-week intermediate to advanced course designed for artists with previous painting experience. Explore the versatility of contemporary watercolour through hands-on projects that combine technical skill-building with creative experimentation.

Topics covered include:

  • Core watercolour techniques and water-to-pigment control
  • Tonal values, variegated washes, and palette exploration
  • Loose and expressive landscape painting
  • Colour harmony, balance, and atmospheric effects
  • Texture creation using traditional and contemporary materials
  • Dramatic lighting, chiaroscuro, and observational painting
  • Layering, depth, and edge control for urban and natural scenes
  • Composition, visual storytelling, and portfolio development
  • Experimental techniques including frisket, palette knife, and Batik-inspired methods
  • Impressionistic, abstract, and contemporary watercolour approaches
  • Personal style development and creative expression
  • Fantasy and illustration-inspired painting techniques

Throughout the course, students will create artwork inspired by seasonal landscapes, harvest still lifes, atmospheric city scenes, abstract compositions, and imaginative illustration projects. This class is ideal for artists looking to strengthen their technical abilities, explore innovative materials and methods, and develop a confident, distinctive voice in watercolour painting.

About the Instructor

Yulia Lisitsyna is a professional artist, designer, and educator with over 25 years of experience working in watercolour, acrylic, drawing, and mixed media. Since 2016, she has taught at the Ottawa School of Art, sharing her expertise in contemporary painting techniques, composition, and artistic expression.

Originally trained in fine arts in Moscow, Yulia has worked as a ceramic artist, studio co-owner, museum artist, and exhibitor in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Sweden. Her diverse artistic background and international exhibition experience inform her unique teaching approach, which blends strong technical foundations with creative exploration.

Since 2017, Yulia has also taught workshops and courses at Wallack's Art Supplies and Framing, helping students of all levels build confidence, develop their artistic voice, and create artwork they are proud to share. Her classes emphasize experimentation, skill development, and the joy of discovering new possibilities through art.
