What is phenology? It is simply cyclical changes in nature, the things we notice as the seasons change -- flowering of plants, changing of leaf color, migration of birds and such. Naturalist Sylvia Marek has recorded these events at Owen Park for decades, in the traditional of Aldo Leopold and other esteemed natural historians, and has shared that information with us in monthly written reports since 2022. Join Sylvia for a guided nature walk taking an in-depth look at seasonal changes in our prairie, savanna and woodland plant and animal communities. If you have read and enjoyed Sylvia's written monthly phenology reports for our park, this is your chance to join her in the field for a closer look at seasonal biological events. The walk starts and ends at the parking lot and takes us along many of the park's trails, covering 1 mile or so over 1.5 hours at a botanist's pace.
Sylvia Marek has worked as a naturalist at the UW Arboretum since 1979 and has led tours and taught classes there and elsewhere on subjects including owls, bluebirds and reading the landscape.
All are welcome! This walk is best suited to adults or young people who want to observe closely and learn about plants and animals beyond an introductory level. As a courtesy, please let me know if you plan to come, at [email protected], but this is not required.
