This November, Dallas Contemporary joins Fall of Freedom, a nationwide call to action uniting artists, cultural institutions, and communities in defense of creative expression. In response to rising authoritarianism and censorship, Fall of Freedom activates museums, galleries, theaters, and community spaces across the country to celebrate the power of art as resistance.Dallas Contemporary will activate the museum as a makerspace for creative protest during the two-day program. Visitors are invited to take part in hands-on workshops and resource stations that center artistic freedom and self-expression as essential civic tools. Guests will create their own protest materials such as buttons, signs, and T-shirts, amplifying their individual voices through collective action.
The museum's activation will draw inspiration from Chris Wolston: Profile in Ecstasy, a major exhibition organized by guest curator Glenn Adamson, that reimagines design as a performance of liberation. Referencing the spirit of queer expression, postmodern design, and the radical playfulness of the 1970s and ’80s, Wolston’s work embodies transformation and resistance through pleasure and form. His exuberant objects invite movement, joy, and visibility, which underscore the creative defiance at the heart of Fall of Freedom. At the center of the exhibition stands a water fountain modeled after the iconic image of Grace Jones from her 1985 album, Island Life, a striking symbol of power.
In connection with this spirit, Dallas Contemporary is inviting musicians who have collaborated with the museum to contribute to a collective playlist available on DC’s YouTube channel, extending the conversation through music.
