It is that time of the year where we need to thin our flock of ducks and butcher the roosters before they start bothering our neighbors.
We want to invite you to join us next weekend if you are interested in participating in and learning about bird butchering.
We will set aside a few birds for Alameda Point Collaborative members and make the rest available to purchase with a $30-$50 sliding scale donation to the Makerfarm's Animal Project (https://bayareamaker.farm/projects/chicken-and-duck). The revenue pays for the the feed and medicine that keeps all Makerfarm animals healthy.
First right to purchase will go to people who show up to help with the processing.
The death of our animals is not something we take for granted. Every part of their being will go to nourish heart and soul of people in the community.
In addition to selling the meat,
- the brains will be used for hide tanning
- the livers will be used to make paté
- the discarded bones will be used for broth
- the discarded skin will be rendered down for duck fat
- the feathers will be available for use to anyone who wishes to use them
We'd be happy to make a cooking class out of the Paté, broth making, and fat rendering but only if there is committed interest so please let us know.
