The Root Children Fairytale Concert was inspired by The Story of the Root-Children, published in 1906 by Etwas von clan Wurzelkindern. MCD director Sara Rohs wrote an updated story and directed the Madison Contemporary Dancers, Hitterz Collective, and guest students to bring the story to the stage.
MCD's adaptation updates the story of Root Children who are awakened in the spring by Mother Nature. The Root Children go on an adventure through the seasons and are taught life lessons by Aunt Spring as they prepare for the Summer Ball. The story ends in autumn when the Root Children go to rest until the next spring awakening. The lessons are about being brave, standing tall, using your breath, and the strength of persistence. Positive life lessons are taught through the joy of fairytales as the platform, using emotions and storytelling.
Contemporary and street-style professional dancers will perform pieces created together. You will see ballet and modern-based contemporary dance, and street styles such as hip hop, krump, house, popping, breakdancing, and more. Our hope is to inspire people from different backgrounds to work together. We believe the future of dance is about bringing people together to create art and community.
