This course will be devoted to learning fundamentals of technique and groove and select repertoire on typical percussion instruments of the samba school Bateria (Drum Section).
The Course is open to students of any skill or experience level -- from complete newbies to advanced players of samba percussion. All course participants will be invited to join the Samba New York! Bateria in the NYC Village Halloween Parade on Thursday, October 31st, 2024.
The Course will be divided into two parts. The first 4 classes in September will be instrumental sectionals. Here students will learn the basics of their instruments and the repertoire for the Parade. The last 4 classes in October will be full Bateria Rehearsals, which will be devoted to refining the sound of the entire Bateria. All enrolled participants in the course are expected to attend all 4 full Bateria Rehearsals and at least the sectional that pertains to the instrument they plan to play in the Parade. All students may participate in the other sectionals as well at their discretion.
All players in the Parade are expected to show a basic command of their instrument and knowledge of the repertoire for the event by the start of the full Bateria Rehearsals. Private coaching is available for those who need extra support.

WHAT TO BRING:
Participants are asked to bring their own samba percussion instrument(s), a pair of drum sticks, and ear plugs. A limited number of smaller instruments may be available to borrow on a first-come-first-served basis.
HOW TO REGISTER:
Send an email to [email protected] and include your full name, the instrument you plan to bring (if applicable), your preferred jersey size and type (unisex or babylook), and any experience you may have with samba percussion (none is required).

Bateria Membership Rate: $280 - if received by 7/8/24
Non-Bateria-Membership Rate: $350 - due by 9/5/24
Bateria members are defined as those participants in the Bateria Rehearsal Course who send in their course fees by the early bird date (in this case, 7/8/24) and who are prepared to perform and commit to performing with the Samba New York! Bateria in the event(s) associated with the course (in this case, the Halloween Parade). Bateria members may be entitled to special discounts on other Samba New York! offerings for the duration of their membership (specific offerings and any discount amounts are TBD). Membership expires at 12:00 AM EST on January 1, 2025.
A Samba New York! jersey is required to join our Bateria in the Halloween Parade. The jersey may be purchased separately for $50.

REPERTOIRE:
The repertoire for the Parade will be sent via unlisted YouTube links to each participant who registers for the course. Access to these practice videos leading up to the Parade is included in the Course Fee.
SUBSTITUTE INSTRUCTOR:
A substitute may fill in for the regularly scheduled instructor as needed.
REFUND POLICY:
All payments are nonrefundable. No refunds or credits will be granted for missed classes or any other reason.
NYC VILLAGE HALLOWEEN PARADE INFORMATION:
1. Call Time on Thursday, October 31st is 5:30 PM in the park to the west of Sixth Avenue at the corner of Spring Street in Manhattan.
2. All participants in the Samba New York! Bateria will need to bring their own instruments and accessories (straps, sticks, mallets, extra heads, etc.) to the Parade. There will be no place to stow cases or other personal items.
3. Dress code is white pants (no sweat pants) and the 2023 green Samba New York! jersey. In case of cool weather, a black sweater or sweatshirt may be worn underneath the jersey.
4. The Parade begins at 7:00 PM. The exact time that Samba New York! steps off will depend on our location in the lineup. The Parade route takes approximately one hour to complete, going up Sixth Avenue to West 16th Street.
