When ACSS first launched, we began hosting back-to-school events to provide students with supplies to start strong. We wanted to collaborate with other organizations to avoid duplication but faced challenges with recognition barriers.
We asked: Who’s checking in with students after school starts?
That led to Back-to-School Kickbacks, held after students receive their first interim grades in fall and after spring break. These Kickbacks do more than distribute supplies. They allow ACSS to register families, follow up, prescreen for additional needs, and identify key performance indicators (KPIs) like attendance, behavior, homework completion, grief, and lack of resources helping us make targeted referrals.
Kickbacks also offer students a safe space to relax, enjoy fun activities, free food, entertainment, and haircuts while encouraging continued engagement in education.
