About this Event

FAITHFUL JOHANNES & NEOCIA come to BLUES NIGHT, Richmond, North Yorkshire in support of their new album The House at Night - released 11th October - via Butterfly Effect. The critically acclaimed Durham rapper returns to the fore with his third album. The House at Night is a delicate study of childhood memories, familial relationships and parental angst, that places Johannes’ poetic forte at the front and centre of the North East hip hop scene. Crafted within an almost Lynchian framework, the album delves into a myriad of themes that range from the surreal to the all too real. Dreams and fears; pressures and expectations; nostalgia and present day realities; all of these are explored across 14 songs that underscore Johannes’ reputation as the “Alan Bennett of hip hop”. Orbiting in the same rap galaxy as transatlantic counterparts Serengeti and R.A.P. Ferreira, Johannes unloads his bars with a seemingly casual delivery that disarms the listener and eases them into the depth of his lyricism. For the production, Johannes has reunited with Hartlepool native, Neocia, whose approach on The House at Night is the perfect counterpoint for Johannes’ words, using electronic soundscapes and handmade samples to bring even more atmosphere to the album. From the blissful, syncopated tones of Auto-Reversing and the woozy head-nod-inducing joy of Plan Your Dreams, to the muted burst of Tony Rossinger and the melancholy texture of Two Thousand Ten, every beat is scene-setting perfection. Tom Robinson (BBC 6MUSIC) has called him ‘a great artist’, ‘a rivetingly charismatic live performer’ and said ‘if you have any chance at all, see him live’. Deb Grant (BBC 6 Music / Jazz FM) has called his work ‘clever and authentic and really affecting’.

CEILING DEMONS are an alternative art-rap / spoken word band from Richmond, North Yorkshire, UK. The masked project born out of bereavement takes influence from artists such as Kae Tempest, Joy Division, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Tricky. Combining poetic wordplay from twin brothers; Psy Ceiling and Dan Demon over a vast array of instrumentals that sways from acoustic to cinematic to raw to experimental and beyond. Ceiling Demons aim to strike heartstrings with their intense and chaotic performances touching on themes of love and loss delivered with a punk philosophy. They have been strong advocates of addressing mental health issues in their art and have worked extensively with suicide prevention charities such as CALM to raise awareness and funds for a cause close to their hearts. They’ve supported the likes of Young Fathers, Sleaford Mods, Dylan Cartlidge, Ceschi and Armand Hammer among others and are praised by Louder Than War and NARC. Magazine for their passionate live shows. The group often perform live with Art Demon – their in-house artist who creates unique pieces of art during shows. Their latest album, SNAKES & LADDERS - released via Butterfly Effect and Fake Four Inc. - drifts through genres and features contributions from Andy Lawrenson, Zarahruth and the late, great revolutionary artist – Lee Scratch Perry.
