Faith in Action: The Church Leading the Fight for Civil Rights, From Sanctuaries to the Streets
The church has long stood at the heart of the Civil Rights Movement, providing both spiritual fortitude and an unwavering call to action. In a time when civil rights were being denied, it was the church that led the charge, serving as a sanctuary for hope and a platform for protest. From the pulpit to the streets, the church was a cornerstone of the movement, guiding communities in the pursuit of equality, justice, and freedom.
As civil rights are once again under attack, and with hard-won progress being rolled back, the church’s role has never been more critical. This program calls upon faith leaders, civic organizers, and advocates to reflect on the church’s historical leadership in the Civil Rights Movement while examining its necessary and urgent role in today’s fight for justice. As we face challenges like voter suppression, racial inequality, and systemic injustices, the church must again rise to the forefront—leading from the sanctuary and into the streets to defend the rights of all people.
