***Fairy WHA?!?! Let's break this event title down!***In this class, Organizer Andrew will teach you how to build a hibernaculum (a little den that protects amphibians and reptiles like froggies and sneks as they hibernate during the cold winter months) in your own backyard!
***Why would I want sneks and froggies to live in my yard?**
Weyell, humans have destroyed gettin'-close-to 100% of DuPage County's natural habitat (since European arrival), and so we have a moral obligation to repair whatever ecological relationships that we can!
In addition, sneks and froggies eat a bunch of the very garden pests that would otherwise be attacking your veggie and fruit plants!
Did you know that a single toad can eat 100+ mosquito larvae in a day?! :)
***Where does the fairy part come in?***
Good question! Instead of just installing a giant heap of rubble, we're going to decorate our hibernaculum to look like a lil fairy home so it draws the attention of garden guests and serves as a conservation conversation piece. ;P
***What is "fly-dumped urbanite?"***
Fly-dumping is a very serious problem in DuPage County! If you've ever been to any greenspace in DuPage, you've probably seen random garbage bags, electronics, or old furniture just sitting around in the parking lot or along the side of a trail or road. This is fly-dumped garbage. When people want to avoid paying to have their garbage stored in a dump (sometimes called a land-fill), they leave it in a natural area for the municipalities/County to clean up. (We checked, nobody is even tracking the occurrence of these illegal offenses, costing taxpayers hundreds if not thousands of dollars in cleanup every year). >:(
"Urbanite" is a word people use to describe hunks of broken up concrete or asphalt.
