Moral Obligations in a World Afraid of Refugees
It’s a tough moment to talk about refugees. There is little sympathy for helping non-citizens who have been portrayed as not victims of injustice, but as political, economic and cultural threats. Acknowledging this reality is important because it demonstrates that the central question that philosophers have been asking is even more difficult today: do we have moral obligations to help people who are not citizens of our country? This talk seeks to answer these questions by showing that our responsibility to refugees is not an act of generosity but rooted a responsibility that we hold to rectify a harm that we have created.
