JOIN US! Anyone is welcome to join our crew, young or old, and no experience is required. There is something for every ability level from picking up trash, pulling invasive garlic mustard, carrying cut branches, lopping small branches, to cutting down trees. Your time is spent helping to save an endangered ecosystem while learning about nature and engaging with other volunteers.
**The site is located in Batavia at the corner of Route 25 and Fabyan, just SOUTH of the bridge and along the river trail. The site is called Fabyan Woods South.**
WHAT WE DO. The goal of our environmental stewardship workdays is to remove invasive species so that native plants may again flourish below the majestic oaks on this site and open up a breathtaking view of our beautiful Fox River. People often ask, “Why are you cutting down trees?” The answer, we are mainly removing two “bad” trees/shrubs, buckthorn and honeysuckle. Both non-native species prevent the growth of native plants that benefit our local environment and provide ecological services. Restoring this site can help control area flooding by helping to filter and retain water, will eliminate habitat that hosts harmful tick and mosquito populations, and will increase animal and plant biodiversity for a more healthy landscape.
HOW TO FIND US. Parking can be accessed from the windmill parking lot (off Route 25 just north of Fabyan Pkwy), then by foot head south (along the east bank) on the Fox River Trail along the river until just after you pass under the Fabyan Bridge. Or you can access parking from Laurelwood Park in Batavia near Laurelwood Lodge. From here you follow the Fox River Trail north along east bank of the river until just before the bridge. For bikers or if you are running late, just head down (up) the trail and you will see us working just south of Fabyan Bridge along the trail (or in the center prairie), it's a short journey. I'll have tools for cutting, wear your safety gear (but I have extras if you forget), and I am always serving up my signature Woodland Mocha.
SUGGESTED ATTIRE. Long pants, closed toed shoes (preferrably boots), work gloves, safety glasses, long sleeves, bug spray. We have extra work gloves and safety glasses if you forget yours. We also provide tools, snacks, coffee, and water.
*NOTE: Please bring your mask and follow 6' social distancing guidelines.*
The event will be cancelled if there is inclement weather, for the most up to date information and for other pop-up events please join our email list.
