About this Event
In this hands-on workshop learn about the traditional Japanese art of fabric wrapping, you will hear how this tradition borne out of necessity and convenience developed into a true art form using only a simple square piece of fabric. Fading out of everyday use with the introduction of the plastic grocery bag, the furoshiki is now making a strong come-back, thanks to its eco-friendly appeal!
In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn the basic knots and techniques needed for gift wrapping and for carrying items of varying sizes and shapes. You will be amazed at how a single piece of cloth has endless possibilities! Note: The presenter will provide furoshiki and props for the participants to borrow during this workshop.

Instructor bio:
Lynn Miyauchi is a third generation, Japanese American from Seattle, who has always enjoyed learning about Japanese craft-related traditions. She taught English in Japan on the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program before joining the staff at the Consulate-General of Japan in Seattle. As the Senior Specialist for Cultural Affairs, she enjoys introducing and sharing Japanese culture, especially through hands-on activities like her furoshiki workshop, which teaches Japanese fabric wrapping techniques that are both extremely versatile and eco-friendly!
