This Autumn, immerse yourself in an enchanting storytelling experience at the Fable Family Festival, where young and old alike can reconnect with the rich tradition of storytelling. Fable celebrates the timeless art of storytelling, reimagining it in exciting and imaginative ways to engage curious young minds and inspire the next generation of seanchaí.
On September 22nd, the festival kicks off at the Irish Film Institute in Temple Bar, where IFI Family presents Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first-ever animated feature film.
Following this screening, enjoy a free day of family fun! Meeting House Square will come alive with interactive characters, face-painters, and a pop-up library hosted by Dublin City Library, where visitors can borrow books and sign up for library cards.
Tales for little legends will come to life on the Ark outdoor stage. With stories from children’s writer Dave Rudden, costumes from Claire Garvey, and designs from Kiki Na, this captivating performance blends aerial dance, puppetry and theatrics together to reimagine Ireland’s rich folklore. The “Fable" show will retell Irish myths and legends for young ears, as seanchaís and vibrant characters bring colourful tales of the fearsome Caorthannach (a monstrous dragon monster), the heroic Cú Chulainn, the Fairy Queen and the mischievous Puca, and the tragic Children of Lir.
After the show, children will be encouraged to harness the spooky sounds of nature with the Morrigan’s “Sounds of the Forest”, play games with the mischievous Puca, and shake off the cobwebs with our resident good witch Cailleach. She’ll guide them on a journey of discovery of inner magic, using spells and mantras to inspire positive wellbeing.
For those who can’t be there in person, Fable Family Festival will also feature its own podcast launching on September 20th, with renowned seanchaí Eddie Lenihan sharing stories of the "other folk," alongside modern myths read by singer Jerry Fish and actress Mary Murray.
Later this autumn, the James Joyce Centre will host a series of workshops and mythic tales, and songs as part of a literary cabaret for young audiences.
