Join CMA affinity group Friends of African American Art & Culture (FAAAC) for the 10th annual Sip & Scribble — an artful, soulful evening of coloring, creativity, and community. This year’s featured artists, Kimara London and Harry McFadden, bring their unique visions to the event with original line drawings inspired by their artistic practices. Guests are invited to color, connect, and unwind while engaging directly with the artists, who will be on hand to share insights and stories about their work.
Cash bar. Free as part of Free First Thursday at the CMA.
Kimara London is a professional portrait artist, painter, and ceramist who has enriched the Carolinas with her talent for creating lifelike designs. She holds a B.A. in studio art from the University of South Carolina. Her murals are featured in various local businesses in Columbia, and she has completed commissioned works for former Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin and Senator Tameika Isaac Devine. Specializing in portrait art, London creates realistic drawings from personal settings and photos, using mediums such as oil, acrylic, and charcoal. She breathes life into her subject matter, captivating viewers with her artistry. London believes that everyone possesses a God-given talent; it is simply a matter of discovering it.
Harry Arnette McFadden is a self-described Afro-Carolinian and has 26 years of experience as an educator. He has been employed with Florence School Districts 1 and 3 and currently works at the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice. He expresses an innate calling created from an ancestral coding within his DNA, a sequence that serves as an interactive outlet for the viewer. To him, art is not as much about what is on the canvas as it is about what caused it to be there. His point of view is Southern, rural, Black, and male. His work has been described as provocative, energetic, intriguing, whimsical, and powerful. His formal education was received in the public schools of Williamsburg County; he is a 1986 graduate of Kingstree Sr. High School, Francis Marion College 1990, and Lesley University 2006, with a Master of Education in instruction and curriculum with a specialization in teaching through the arts. He has presented at the Palmetto State Arts Education Conference.
