Hands on STEM session for 3-7yrs old, looking at Space and the Solar System
About this Event

Our Early Years Sessions are for up to 7yrs old. Each session we investigate aspects of a different theme, introducing new vocabulary and concepts and allowing the children to participate in activities using scientific equipment and allowing time for exploration. We must ask parents to stay to support during these sessions. We will provide disposable gloves and aprons for these sessions, as required, but we warn you, the best science is messy science!

For this session, we will be exploring space! We will be using our star projector to look at the constellations, learning a little bit about the stories in the stars and making a model that shows how the moon orbits around the Earth, and the Earth orbits around the Sun!

We will allow time for some use of our interactive exhibits, though we have had to remove some items from the gallery, based on the difficulty in being able to clean them thoroughly between uses.

These sessions are hugely popular. If we have enough interest, we will consider repeating the Monday session on an available Tuesday for those who do not initially secure a place.

£8.90 per child per session

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Please be aware of the following;

• IF YOU HAVE NOT BOOKED ONLINE YOU WILL BE TURNED AWAY AT THE DOOR! We have tried to be accommodating to everyone but have faced multiple occasions where we are waiting for people who have contacted us to say they would like to attend and then have not turned up. This is hugely disruptive for those people who have paid in advance and turned up on time. Additionally, we are now down to just two staff members, we do not have the time to complete the admin and prep work required for multiple additional people.

• IF YOU DO NOT BOOK ON TIME YOU DO NOT GET A SPACE! Due to our reduced team, we are currently unable to accept bookings after the cut-off date, which are included in the listings above, it is YOUR responsibility to know when the closing date is for the sessions you want to book.

• WE ARE NOT ABLE TO PROVIDE REFUNDS, so please make sure that you know what you are booking for and are available for the dates in question, before you book.

• Please do make note of the dates in your own calendar/diary: each half term we have about 200 children sign up for our Home Ed programmes, we are unable to email everyone reminders in advance of sessions.

• We have extended our booking availability, but will not be able to extend further, so please ensure that you book before the closing date, or you will not be able to book.

• We will only be able to run sessions if a minimum of 60% of places are booked. Should we have to cancel sessions due to a lack of uptake, we will notify you via email and you will receive a full refund.

• Please be aware that we may not answer emails or social media posts outside of working hours. If you have a question for the STEM Discovery Centre team or would like to notify us of absence or other issues relating directly to participating in our Home Educators sessions, please do so via email, [email protected] as we do not always see posts via social media. Please also be aware that we are fully booked with school visits every day that we are not doing Home Ed sessions, so response times will likely be longer and there will not always be people around to answer the phone.

• We will be following the government COVID guidance for schools.

• As restrictions are relaxing and we are no longer required to social distance in a classroom setting, we will no longer be using a seating plan for any of our sessions. This means that you may have to share a table with other people!!! Play nice!

• For our Early Years and Friday STEM sessions, we ask that an adult accompany children throughout the session. Although previously we have allowed “drop-offs” for the Friday STEM session, we cannot support multiple individuals and ensure that social distance is maintained.

• We will not open the doors to the facility any sooner than the advertised start time of your session, so dress for the weather! We ask that you be prompt in your arrival so that the session is not delayed or disrupted once it has begun.

• You will need to leave the centre no later than the advertised end time as we will still need to undertake cleaning during the time between sessions, to maintain safety for all. We ask that you be respectful of the needs of our staff and other visitors by allowing us sufficient time to undertake the tasks necessary to maintain everyone’s’ health and safety and reset for further sessions.

• If you are unable to attend a session, for any reason, we ask that you send us email notification in advance to [email protected]. We will not be able to provide any resources or video instructions if you are unable to attend.

• If you are unable to attend a session, for any reason, you are of course welcome to sell your ticket on to someone else, however we do ask that you email [email protected] to notify us in advance, so that no one is put in an embarrassing situation on the day.
