Cranial cruciate ligament insufficiency is a common orthopedic problem in dogs and cats. Successful treatment requires accurate diagnosis and assessment. This course will provide up-to-date information on the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of cranial cruciate ligament insufficiency. Lectures and labs will emphasize techniques that can readily be performed in practice. Participants will learn how to differentiate partial versus complete tears of the CrCL. The course will include sections on stifle isometric extracapsular repair, treatment of meniscal tears and meniscal release using the latest technology and surgical technique. Following lecture and case review, participants will perform all techniques on cadavers and plastic bone models. Postoperative radiographs will be taken to assess the participants repair technique. Postoperative management will be discussed in detail as well as recognition and management of intra-operative and post-operative complications.Learning Objectives
1. Participants will be able to list factors contributing to CCL injury and describe intra-articular pathology associated with CCL injury.
2. Participants will be able to describe physical exam and radiographic findings associated with CCL injury.
3. Participants will be able to identify and execute in the cadaver the isometric sites recommended for stabilization of the CCL deficient stifle.
4. Participants will be able to develop a proper post-operative management program.
5. Participants will be able to recognize and management post operative complications.
