On screen, Doctor Who is a story of monsters, imagination and mind-expanding adventure. But the off-screen story discovered by John Higgs – novelist, journalist, cultural historian and author of The KLF: Chaos, Magic And The Band Who Burned A Million Pounds and Love And Let Die: Bond, The Beatles and the Making of the British Psyche – is equally extraordinary.
It’s a tale of failed monks, war heroes, 1960s polyamory and self-sabotaging broadcasting executives. From the politics of fandom to the inner struggles of the BBC, thousands of people have given part of themselves – and sometimes, too much of themselves – to bring this unlikeliest of folk heroes to life.
Interviewing John and reversing the polarity of the neutron flow will be lifelong Doctor Who fan Andrew Harrison . The former editor of music magazines Select , Mixmag and Q , now presenter of hit podcasts Oh God, What Now? and The Bunker , Andrew’s earliest memory of all is the Sea Devils emerging from the waves. His favourite Doctor is Tom Baker.
