Jean-Sébastien Simonoviez and Pong Nakornchai reunite at Smalls for Explosive Duo, reducing years of shared musical work to its most direct form: piano and drums.
🎶 The two musicians have worked together in several settings, from Jean-Sébastien’s international Borderless 5tet project to previous performances at Smalls, including Unexpected Ways earlier this year. Explosive Duo takes that established collaboration and strips it back to the conversation between piano and drums.
🎹 Jean-Sébastien Simonoviez — Piano
Born into a musical family, Jean-Sébastien began studying piano at 5 and trumpet at 7. By 16, he was already performing with other musicians and soon began collaborating across Europe and the United States.
A pianist, drummer, composer and arranger, he has recorded numerous albums, including his solo debut Vents et Marées in 2003. He has led projects including Transition and Crossing Life and Strings, and was involved in organizing the Fontiers-Cabardès Jazz Festival.
🌏 Since 2015, Jean-Sébastien has expanded his work across Asia, collaborating extensively with musicians in Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand while continuing to compose and record. His more recent projects include Multifaces and Borderless 5tet, the latter bringing together musicians from several countries for a recording made in Bangkok.
🥁 Pong Nakornchai — Drums
A familiar face at Smalls and one of the busiest drummers in Bangkok jazz, Pong works across straight-ahead jazz, contemporary composition and more open forms of improvisation.
He leads the Pong Nakornchai Quartet and has performed under the Pong Nakornchai Ensemble name, while his collaborations include Joe Rosenberg, Will Lyle, the Aartsen family, Pekka Pylkkänen, George Garzone, Jakob Dinesen, Masa Sasaki and Jean-Sébastien Simonoviez.
💿 His recorded work includes Suite for Chick with Maarten Goetheer and Borderless 5tet with Jean-Sébastien, adding to a career that has taken him from Bangkok clubs and concert stages to performances elsewhere in Asia.
